Verdant Brewing Co: From a Cornwall Shipping Container to Penryn's Hop-Forward Brewery and Four Venues

|

On a Tuesday afternoon at the Penryn taproom, the bar stays busy with locals, students from the nearby campus, and visitors who drove down for fresh beer and wood-fired pizza. Stainless tanks sit behind glass on the brewery side of the building, and the staff pour from sixteen keg lines and four cask handpumps. Verdant Brewing Co built this room after a 2018 Crowdcube campaign that raised more than £1 million, and the company opened the Penryn brewery in January 2020. Outside Cornwall, the brewery is best known for the hazy cans that land online on Wednesday mornings. For people in the county, it also means a harbour pub, a seafood restaurant on the quay, and a beach-town bar.

Beer in a kitchen, then a shipping container

The brewery began in autumn 2014 when Adam Robertson and James Heffron joined Richard White to brew US-inspired beers they could not buy locally. The three had been homebrewing together, and the gap in Cornwall's pubs pushed them toward pale ales and IPAs with more hop character than the cask bitters that still dominated many local bars.

The founders moved from a kitchen to a basement, then a shipping container, an arch, and a warehouse before the Penryn build. In the early days, they rented a twenty-foot shipping container in a quarry for £120 a month, with barely room to work but enough intent to keep brewing. By 2015 the team had moved into a warehouse that let them send beer to Bristol, London, and Manchester while Robertson travelled to festivals and tap takeovers to build a name outside the county.

Robertson and Heffron have described the brewery as Falmouth-based and gave their house rule as "Drink fresh, hops fade fast!" That line still fits how the company sells beer today. The webshop drops new cans at 10:30 every Wednesday, and the Penryn taproom is where the beer is poured straight from the tanks beside the bar.

Crowdfunding and the Penryn brewery

By late 2018, Verdant had outgrown its setup. The Crowdcube campaign went live in November with an initial £500,000 target for a 17,500-square-foot brewery and taproom. The team hit that figure quickly and extended the raise toward £1 million. The move was to a former shipyard building nearly eight metres tall—unusual for low-rise Falmouth and Penryn—with plans for a taproom overlooking the brewhouse and room for live events.

By January 2019, more than 2,000 people had invested and the company moved to a warehouse on the Kernick industrial estate in Penryn. The founders started Verdant because no one in Cornwall was making the IPAs they had fallen in love with, and they wanted to expand while staying in the Falmouth area for the water and local support. Turnover had doubled to about £1.1 million the previous year. During this time, Verdant pulled out of a craft beer show run by Beavertown in protest at Beavertown selling a share to Heineken, with the founders stating they could not align with global beer brands.

The new site opened in January 2020. The team installed a bespoke kit built with SSV Limited, kept the brew length at 40 hectolitres, and designed the brewhouse to run up to three brews in twelve hours. This efficiency allows the team to brew multiple batches in a single shift, keeping up with the demand that outstripped their previous warehouse setup. The brewery packages kegs and cans three to four times a week and still treats the Wednesday webshop release as the main way to put the freshest cans in customers' hands. Free mainland shipping applies to orders over £50 on the shop.

The move to Penryn was not just about volume; it was about creating a permanent home that could handle the technical requirements of their hop-heavy recipes. High ceilings in the former shipyard building allowed for the installation of large fermentation tanks, which are visible through the glass partition in the taproom. This transparency is a deliberate part of the design, giving visitors a view of the production process while they drink. The founders have often spoken about the importance of staying in the Falmouth area, citing the local water quality and the support of the community as key factors in their success.

Four rooms, one county

Verdant runs four venues across Cornwall. The taprooms are designed to reflect local life rather than following a standard brewery template. Each site has its own personality, from the industrial energy of the brewery tap to the traditional feel of a harbour pub.

The Penryn Taproom sits beside the brewery at 30 Parkengue, Kernick Industrial Estate, Penryn TR10 9EP. The bar has sixteen keg lines and four cask lines, plus local cider, spirits, wine, and soft drinks. Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas run from a kitchen that opens at noon and closes at 10pm Tuesday to Sunday. Head chef Steve and the team focus on fresh, often local ingredients for the pizzas, which have become a major draw for the venue. The taproom hosts DJs, quizzes, films, and community bookings. Opening hours are Monday closed, Tuesday to Saturday 11:00–23:00, and Sunday 12:00–22:00. Penryn station is a fifteen-minute walk, with limited on-site parking and street parking around the estate.

The Seafood Bar on Falmouth's quay opened in October 2018 as a tapas restaurant and taproom. It has earned a spot in Condé Nast Traveller's Cornwall restaurant picks. The room pairs small plates and fresh seafood with house beer, offering a more refined dining experience than the industrial taproom. It sits in the heart of Falmouth, making it an easy stop for those exploring the town's shops and harbour.

The Seaview Inn is a harbour pub dating to the 1800s, with Verdant beer on twelve keg lines and four cask lines alongside other local beers and ciders. It retains the feel of a traditional Cornish pub but with a modern beer list. The Desi Kitchen serves Indian dishes from the tandoor and grill, from pakoras and samosas to curries and tandoori meats. This combination of traditional pub atmosphere and authentic Indian food has made it a favourite for both locals and visitors.

Schooners in St Agnes has five Verdant taps, a selected spirits and wine list, and Neapolitan sourdough pizza from the same pizza programme used in Penryn. It offers a beach-side setting for enjoying Verdant beer, further expanding the brewery's reach across the county. Verdant's beers reach more than 1,000 UK venues and ship to more than twenty countries, with all four Cornish sites pouring the range for visitors who want to drink in the county.

Each September, Verdant also organises the Falmouth Beer Trail, a weekend that sends drinkers between six town venues with more than fifty beers from fourteen breweries. The 2024 edition marked the trail's fourth year and coincided with the company's tenth birthday, with special releases at the Penryn taproom alongside the pub crawl format. The trail includes stops at local favourites like The Working Boat and The Cornish Bank, fostering a sense of community among the town's bars and breweries.

What they brew

The house style is hoppy, juicy, hazy, unfiltered, and vegan-friendly, with a focus on pale ale, IPA, and DIPA inspired by both US coasts. The team also brews lagers and stouts in winter, and the shop rotates collaborations and limited runs alongside core favourites. The "drink fresh" motto is applied to every batch, with a focus on getting the beer from the tank to the customer as quickly as possible to preserve the hop aromatics.

The Beat Generation series ties several flagships together. Marylou is a pale ale, Neal Gets Things Done is an IPA, and Allen is a DIPA sharing the same Citra, Mosaic, and Nelson Sauvin hop bill at increasing strength. This series allows drinkers to see how the same hop combination evolves as the ABV and malt backbone increase. Allen is listed at 8% ABV on the shop. King of May, released as a 10% triple IPA, is the finale to that line. It uses a massive 30 g/l dry hop to push the house style to its limit. Bloom, another long-running IPA, is listed at 6.5% ABV with Mosaic and a touch of Columbus for a drier finish than the hazy core range.

Other regular releases include Even Sharks Need Water, a 6.5% IPA that has become one of the brewery's most recognisable cans. The brewery also experiments with different yeast strains and water profiles to achieve the velvety mouthfeel that has become a hallmark of their hazy beers. While the focus remains on hops, the team has also explored cleaner styles like Helles lager and richer options like coffee porters in collaboration with local roasters like Origin Coffee.

The company now employs about forty people. New releases land on the webshop at 10:30 on Wednesdays, with social posts on Tuesdays teasing what is coming. Cans are also sold at the Penryn taproom for drinking in or taking away. Recent shop listings include session pales, DIPAs, fruited sours, and collaborations with breweries such as Track and Left Handed Giant, plus lagers such as Helles alongside the hazy core.

If you are building a first order from the webshop, the Beat Generation ladder is an easy map: Marylou for a softer pale, Neal Gets Things Done for the house IPA character, Allen at 8% for a heavier DIPA, and King of May for the 10% capstone. Bloom suits drinkers who want more bitterness and less haze than the hazy core. For those looking for something lighter, session pales like Penpol offer the same hop-forward character at a lower ABV.

Visitor and press feedback

Visitors to the Penryn taproom find an industrial space that feels like a proper bar. A mezzanine lowers the ceiling, dark walls add intimacy, and the production side stays visible without being a distraction. Cask versions of Penpol, Verdant's pale-and-hoppy session beer, often appear alongside guest cask from breweries like Left Handed Giant. The atmosphere is often described as welcoming and inclusive, with a mix of students, families, and beer enthusiasts sharing the long tables.

The pizza is often cited as a reason to visit in its own right. Some visitors have driven from as far as Birmingham for pints and a pie before heading home the same day. The wood-fired oven in the taproom produces pizzas with a thin, charred crust and high-quality toppings, matching the standards of the beer.

The Seafood Bar has earned a spot in Condé Nast Traveller's Cornwall restaurant picks. The restaurant side is worth booking separately if seafood and beer together are the goal. Reviewers have praised the freshness of the seafood and the creative small plates, which offer a different perspective on how Verdant's beers can be paired with food.

The brewery's impact on the Cornwall beer scene has been significant. Before Verdant, the local market was dominated by traditional cask bitters. By introducing modern, hop-forward styles, they have helped to broaden the palates of local drinkers and pave the way for other craft breweries in the county. Their commitment to independence and quality has earned them a loyal following both locally and nationally.

The Penryn taproom is the production visit; Falmouth's Seafood Bar and Seaview Inn pair beer with food and harbour views; Schooners adds a beach-town stop. For fresh cans, set a reminder for Wednesday morning. For a pint beside the tanks, head to Penryn.
