North Carolina has earned its reputation as "The State of Southern Beer." With more than 400 independent craft breweries and brewpubs—the largest concentration in the American South—the Tar Heel State offers an embarrassment of riches for beer lovers.[1] Whether you're chasing IPAs in Raleigh, farmhouse ales in Morganton, or sours in Asheville, here's a guide to the best breweries and taprooms across North Carolina.
Why North Carolina?
The North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild reports that over 80% of the state's craft breweries are Guild members, and the industry continues to drive tourism, jobs, and local agriculture.[1] The annual NC Brewers Cup—North Carolina's largest beer competition—attracted a record 935 entries from 123 breweries in 2026, cementing the state's place as the Southeast's craft beer capital.[2]
Asheville: Beer City USA
Asheville consistently ranks among the top cities in the nation for breweries per capita. In 2019, the city placed second nationally with 17 breweries per 50,000 residents, behind only Portland, Maine.[3] By 2022, Asheville had climbed to first place for breweries per 100,000 residents, with roughly 27 breweries serving a city of about 90,000 people.[4]
Burial Beer Co.
Burial Beer Co. has been an Asheville staple since 2013. Known for creative branding and memorable beer names, Burial has developed a devoted following and now operates multiple locations: the original South Slope taproom, Forestry Camp, Eulogy (a live music venue), and bars in Charlotte and Raleigh.[5] The brewery is praised for innovative beers and has ranked among readers' favorite small breweries in the country.[5]
Wicked Weed Brewing
Wicked Weed offers multiple Asheville experiences: the original Brewpub with restaurant and bottle shop, the Funkatorium (dedicated to sour and wild ales with a German-style beer garden), and Wicked Weed West in Candler. The brewery has won awards at the Great American Beer Festival and remains a must-visit for sour fans.[6]
Green Man Brewery
Green Man Brewery took home gold in the American Porter & Brown Ales category at the 2026 NC Brewers Cup.[2] A longtime Asheville fixture, Green Man delivers consistently excellent traditional styles alongside more experimental offerings.
The Triangle: Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill
The Research Triangle packs a serious punch. Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill are home to dozens of breweries, from neighborhood taprooms to award-winning production facilities.
Clouds Brewing (Raleigh)
Clouds Brewing won Raleigh's Best Brewery for the third consecutive year in 2026.[7] The brewery operates a taproom in Raleigh, a brewcade and kitchen in Durham, and a storm cellar in Chapel Hill—making it a Triangle-wide destination. Clouds also won gold in the Specialty Beer category at the 2026 NC Brewers Cup.[2]
Fullsteam Brewery (Durham)
Fullsteam pioneered the "Southern Beer Economy" by brewing with locally sourced ingredients—sweet potatoes, persimmons, and North Carolina grains. Their downtown Durham tavern on Rigsbee Avenue and Boxyard RTP location offer a full food menu alongside distinctive Southern-inspired beers. Fullsteam won gold for British Pale Ale at the 2026 NC Brewers Cup.[2]
Hi-Wire Brewing (Durham)
Hi-Wire's Durham taproom at the Golden Belt Campus features 20 taps of flagship, seasonal, and sour beers. The space is pet- and family-friendly, with a large covered patio, games, and food from neighboring restaurants.[8]
Edit Beer Co. (Raleigh)
Edit Beer Co. is a family-owned, independent craft brewery in North Raleigh. They won silver and gold medals across multiple IPA categories at the 2026 NC Brewers Cup and offer a spacious, family- and pet-friendly taproom.[2][9]
Bombshell Beer Co. (Holly Springs/Raleigh area)
Bombshell's taproom is an intimate, dog- and family-friendly space with a beer garden. Year-round, seasonal, and experimental beers are available in flights, pints, or growlers.[10]
White Street Brewing Co. (Wake Forest)
One of the Triangle's originals, White Street Brewing opened in 2012. The taproom features the original exposed brewhouse where brewers still create small-batch, manually-crafted beers.[11]
Charlotte and the Piedmont
Primal Brewery (Charlotte)
Primal Brewery was voted Best Brewery in the Charlotte area and earned NC Brewery of the Year from the NY International Beer Competition in 2026. The brewery won numerous medals at the USA Beer Ratings and US Open Beer Championship.[12]
Morganton and the Foothills
Fonta Flora Brewery (Morganton)
Fonta Flora has impressed critics by using locally produced ingredients—including North Carolina-grown hops and grains—in their farmhouse-style ales. The brewery has won awards at the Great American Beer Festival, and some argue that North Carolina's best beer comes from Fonta Flora rather than Asheville.[6][13] Lost Province Brewing Co., also in the region, won gold for Porter at the 2026 NC Brewers Cup.[2]
