In the heart of the Sandhills, where Southern Pines meets Pinehurst and the golf courses roll toward the horizon, Hatchet Brewing Company has carved out a different kind of destination. At 490 SW Broad Street, this veteran-owned microbrewery pours bold, award-winning craft beer in a taproom that feels like a neighborhood gathering place—complete with trivia nights, music bingo, and a Star Wars pinball machine.[1][2]

The Hatchet Story

Hatchet Brewing was founded in November 2019 by Greg and Mike, two veterans who met during Special Forces training and bonded over a shared love of brewing and military service.[3] The brewery's name and logo honor the Hatchet Forces—Green Beret teams that conducted covert operations alongside indigenous Vietnamese soldiers during the Vietnam War. That legacy informs the company's philosophy: "No success is ever achieved alone—it takes a team." Hatchet continues that tradition by employing veterans and building a community they call #teamhatchet.[3][4]

Award-Winning Beer

Hatchet describes its beer as "bold, balanced, and irreverent"—and the medals back it up. At the 2026 NC Brewers Cup, North Carolina's largest commercial beer competition with 935 entries from 123 breweries, Hatchet won gold for Merican in the American-Style Sour Ale category.[5] The competition uses blind judging by BJCP-certified judges and Brewers Association style guidelines, making the win a significant recognition of quality.

The brewery maintains a wide-ranging tap list with over 100 different beers on Untappd, where they've earned a 3.72 rating and thousands of check-ins. From sours to IPAs to lagers, Hatchet keeps the taps rotating.[6]

The Taproom Experience

The taproom at 490 SW Broad St is pet-friendly—with water bowls and treat jars for four-legged visitors—and features outdoor seating, a patio, and games including that Star Wars pinball machine.[2][4] Growlers, crowlers, kegs, and nitro options are available for takeaway.[4]

Hours: Closed Mondays. Tuesday–Thursday 2–10pm; Friday–Saturday 12–11pm; Sunday 11am–8pm.[4]

Weekly Events

Hatchet keeps the calendar full:[1][4]

  • Thursday: Taproom trivia
  • Friday: Music bingo
  • Saturday: Country dance night

Rotating food trucks round out the experience, so you can pair a pint with a meal without leaving the lot.

Southern Pines and the Sandhills

Southern Pines sits in Moore County, part of the Sandhills region known for golf, horse country, and a growing craft beverage scene. Hatchet shares the town with Southern Pines Brewing Company, making the area a solid stop for beer lovers passing through or planning a Sandhills weekend. A short drive from Pinehurst, Fayetteville, and Raleigh, Hatchet Brewing is worth the trip for anyone seeking veteran-owned craft beer in a welcoming, community-focused taproom.
