The News

The United States Bartenders’ Guild has announced the finalists in the 2026 Regional United States Cocktail Championship (USCC) Classic Technique. The finalists include Sebastian Popeson, Anastasia Cooper, Max McGee A'Hearn, James Nordine, and SC Baker. Flair Technique Preliminary Competition competitors are also revealed. The Champions in both Classic and Flair will be crowned July 21 at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. The Classic Champion will receive the “Dagostino” Award and the Flair Champion will receive the “Husted” Award. Both champions will represent the US at the World Cocktail Championship in Macau from October 19-24.

USGB announced five “Classic Technique” finalists who will compete at the national finals on July 21 in New Orleans. The announcement highlights how selective the competition is for U.S. bars looking to gain a competitive edge.

Five finalists were chosen from a $142 billion U.S. spirits market, underscoring the depth of talent available. The press notes that these bartenders will represent the United States at the World Cocktail Championship in Macau. With roughly 200 000 on‑premise venues nationwide, only a very small percentage of bartenders reach this stage.

The event is positioned as a national qualifier for an international stage, but the selection process remains extremely narrow: five finalists from a talent pool spanning all regions and styles. For operators, this signals that staff who master Classic Technique can gain a measurable advantage in both local and global markets.

On‑premise managers may use this news to review their cocktail menus. Bars with limited “show‑pony” spirits could add classic techniques—such as precise muddling or measured bitters—to elevate their offerings. Training programs focused on Classic Technique also serve as a selling point in marketing materials and staff interviews.

Distributors will see that the USBG selection is not a wholesale push for any specific spirit SKU; it endorses skill instead of product. The finals’ New Orleans date provides a clear window to align promotional calendars with local hospitality events. A distributor could launch a “Classic Technique” tasting series in partnership with bars that have trained staff, leveraging USBG visibility to drive demand for premium spirits suited to classic cocktails.

Only five finalists underscores how uncommon it is for a bartender to reach this level of recognition. Spirits volume grew just 1.4 % in 2023—a modest increase compared with beer and wine—so bars continue to seek higher margins through craft cocktails. The USBG focus on technical skill offers a way for bars to differentiate themselves, especially as the global cocktail industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2 % from 2024‑2030.

The announcement also highlights the IBA’s reach—over 70 countries participate in its competitions—and shows that winning the U.S. title can open international networking and sponsorship opportunities. For operators, this means that USBG selection offers more than local recognition; it provides a pathway to global exposure for both bartender and bar.

The 2026 USCC Classic Technique finals fall on July 21 in New Orleans. The fixed date offers managers, distributors, and brand partners a clear timeline for planning staff development, menu adjustments, and promotional activities around the event.

The Competition:

The USCC is the national qualifying program through which the United States Bartenders’ Guild selects Team USBG—the bartenders who will carry the flag for the United States at the WCC, an annual event produced by the International Bartenders’ Association (IBA). As the official U.S. delegate to the IBA, the USBG is honored to elevate American bartending talent on an international stage.
