BAJARRIBA Tequila reported a 100% increase in both volume and revenue between 2024 and 2025, a growth rate that outpaces the broader premium tequila segment’s 14.2% value rise (BevWire, 2026). The brand’s expansion into 78 Albertsons and Safeway locations in Arizona during Q2 2025 shows that retailers are betting on "clean label" spirits to capture a more educated consumer base. As the industry faces a glut of new labels, BAJARRIBA’s reliance on certified additive-free production and recycled packaging has moved it from a niche craft project to a high-growth contender projecting 3x growth for 2026 (The Enterprise World, 2026).
The founder’s path from Idaho to Jalisco
Rico Austin did not start in the spirits trade. Raised in Marsing, Idaho, Austin built a career as an author and entrepreneur before co-founding BAJARRIBA in 2020. He often refers to his "PhD in Tequila Studies," a self-proclaimed title backed by an MBA from Thunderbird and years of on-the-ground research in Jalisco. His recent appearance on The Blox, a startup competition show, and his selection as the 2026 IAOTP Top Entrepreneur in Luxury Spirits, have kept the brand in the media cycle during its most aggressive scaling phase (Edge Magazine, 2025; BevWire, 2026).
Austin’s approach centers on "slow sun" (the literal translation of Solento, a brand he has praised, and a philosophy he shares). He emphasizes that the new generation of drinkers is discerning and willing to pay for a story that includes ethical decision-making and respect for the traditional process (Bridle & Bit, 2024).
The 7,000-foot edge: production at El Viejito
The liquid itself comes from the highlands of Jalisco, produced at the El Viejito distillery (NOM 1107) at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The altitude matters: highland agave typically grows larger and develops more sugar, leading to the floral and sweet profiles that premium drinkers currently favor.
BAJARRIBA uses mature eight-year-old Blue Weber agave piñas. These are cooked in hornos (traditional adobe-style brick ovens) rather than high-pressure autoclaves, a choice that preserves the complex flavors of the agave. Most importantly for its market positioning, the brand is one of only 111 out of 3,136 registered tequila brands to be certified additive-free (BevWire, 2026). In a market where glycerin, oak extract, and jarabe (sugar syrup) are common shortcuts to achieve a "smooth" profile, BAJARRIBA uses transparency as its primary marketing tool.
Sustainable luxury by design
The brand’s most visible differentiator is its bottle, modeled after the winding Baja California Peninsula. While many luxury spirits lean on heavy, virgin lead crystal, BAJARRIBA uses recycled glass. This choice earned the brand "Packaging/Bottle of the Year" from Tequila Aficionado Media before the first bottle was even sold (The Enterprise World, 2026).
The sustainability angle has proven effective for retail placement. Beyond the Arizona grocery expansion, the brand has secured placement in the second-largest grocery chain in the U.S. and is currently targeting cruise line distribution through Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas. Austin’s strategy for 2026 involves maintaining firm limits on scale to protect quality while expanding the footprint in Nevada and Southern California (The Enterprise World, 2026).
What to look for next
For enthusiasts and trade buyers, the rise of BAJARRIBA signals a shift in how "premium" is defined. It is no longer just about the price tag or the celebrity backing; it is about the verifiable lack of additives and the environmental footprint of the glass.
When evaluating new agave spirits in 2026, check the NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) number on the back of the bottle. A NOM like 1107 indicates a distillery with a long history of traditional production. If the brand isn't on the certified additive-free list, ask why. As BAJARRIBA’s 100% growth shows, the market is finally rewarding the brands that answer those questions before they are asked.
