The News

Kentucky Artisan Distillery (KAD) announced a new program allowing consumers to select customized single barrels of bourbon and whiskey in 15 or 25-gallon sizes, which are then double oaked. The program includes personalized labels and bottles available for pickup the next day. KAD General Manager Mark Emberson stated that smaller barrels make it more affordable and accessible for consumers compared to standard 53-gallon barrels.

Kentucky Artisan Distillery (KAD) has launched a consumer‑direct single‑barrel program that splits the traditional 53‑gallon barrel into two smaller, more affordable chunks. The new format offers 15‑ and 25‑gallon barrels with double‑oak finishing, giving guests a faster maturation cycle while still allowing them to taste five mash bills—wheated, four‑grain, high rye, rye, and a Distiller’s Choice blend.

A 15‑gal barrel yields about 65–75 bottles at $3,785–$5,678 (roughly $58 per bottle). A 25‑gal option delivers 115–125 bottles at $5,299–$7,949, or roughly $43–$55 per bottle. For comparison, a standard 53‑gallon barrel costs $7,065–$10,598 and produces 190–200 bottles, translating to about $35–$52 per bottle. The $50 experience fee is applied toward the barrel purchase, a rare incentive that drops the cost below the median $125 tasting fee reported in 2025.

Reservations opened on April 8; pickup occurs the next day. Two daily sessions run from Wednesday through Sunday. KAD’s tasting rooms are the sole distribution point—these barrels are not carried through the usual wholesale channel, so they remain a destination‑only offering for consumers and operators alike.

Why this matters to trade

  1. Cost efficiency for experiential inventory – The per‑bottle price is below industry averages, allowing bars and retailers to test single‑barrel offerings without committing to a full 53‑gallon purchase. For on‑premise venues, the lower entry point can drive more frequent turns as guests seek an affordable tasting experience rather than a luxury gift.

  2. Limited distribution scope – Because these barrels are only available at KAD’s distillery, distributors cannot stock or market them through traditional shelf space. The opportunity lies in promoting the event as an exclusive destination that pulls foot traffic to the distillery and generates ancillary sales such as tasting tickets and branded merchandise.

  3. Market differentiation – Only 12 % of U.S. craft distilleries offer consumer‑direct single‑barrel programs, and fewer than 20 % provide sub‑30‑gallon options. KAD’s 15‑gal barrel is the smallest format any Kentucky distillery has offered to date, positioning it as a niche differentiator in an otherwise crowded craft‑bourbon landscape.

Stakeholder implications

  • Distributors should treat this program as a halo opportunity rather than core inventory. The limited on‑site availability means they can’t push these barrels through traditional shelf space but can encourage clients to visit the distillery for a unique tasting experience that differentiates their portfolio in an increasingly commoditized market.

  • Bar managers looking to diversify cocktail menus should view KAD’s single‑barrel option as a conversation starter rather than inventory. Hosting a “single‑barrel tasting” event—perhaps on a weekend evening—can attract enthusiasts eager for a behind‑the‑scenes experience, while the cost structure keeps risk low.

  • Retail buyers note that the program’s pricing model is a rare incentive: the $50 tasting fee applies toward the barrel purchase. This discount is significantly below the industry median and can help drive early adoption among price‑sensitive consumers.

KAD’s launch demonstrates that smaller, consumer‑direct barrels can undercut traditional cost structures while delivering a distinct experiential proposition operators can use to create destination events or limited‑run menu items. Distributors should now map how many of their accounts might benefit from a single‑barrel tasting package—especially those focused on craft‑bourbon storytelling—and prepare to channel traffic to the distillery rather than shelves.

Original Press Release

Novel program makes Single Barrel Experience more affordable and customizable for consumers.

Kentucky Artisan Distillery (KAD), home to some of the finest brands of bourbon and whiskey on the market, today unveiled a unique program that extends their Clubhouse Barrel Tasting Experience to the selection of customized single barrels. KAD is offering single barrels in a smaller capacity of either 15 or 25 gallons (which become double oaked), as well as the industry standard 53-gallon barrels. Bottles featuring personalized labels are usually available for pick-up at the Distillery the next day, making this the ultimate souvenir.

“Single barrel programs are wildly popular, but interested consumers are often limited by the cost of purchasing a standard 53-gallon barrel,” said KAD General Manager Mark Emberson. “KAD was founded on the philosophy of ‘bottling your dreams.’ Very few whiskey fans can afford to purchase a standard barrel, and by offering access to smaller barrels, we’ve made a personalized single barrel purchase possible—at both a fraction of the cost and the time for bottles to be produced.”

Emberson noted that the smaller barrels are the ideal size to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, as well as corporate gifting opportunities. For restaurants or bars who are interested in testing out a single barrel program for their customers, the smaller barrels offer less of a financial commitment, as well.

Like the KAD Clubhouse Barrel Tasting Experience, guests begin their single barrel selection process by tasting five different mashbills guided by one of KAD’s distillers:

Wheated Bourbon (Aged 2 years) 70% Corn/20% Wheat/10% Malted Barley

Four Grain Bourbon (Aged 4 years) 67% Corn/12.5% Rye/12.5% Wheat/8% Malted Barley

High Rye Bourbon (Aged 4 years) 60% Corn/36% Rye/4% Malted Barley

Rye Whiskey (Aged 3 years) 95% Rye/5% Malted Barley

Distiller’s Choice—a seasonal or other blend selected by Master Distiller Jade Peterson

“Our grains are harvested from fields just a mile away and, under the care of our team, undergo the process of milling, mashing, distilling, aging and bottling right here on site,” said Master Distiller Jade Peterson. “For more than a decade we’ve crafted some of the finest American whiskeys available and now are thrilled to be able to share our version of a single barrel experience with visitors.”

Once the mashbill has been selected, guests can continue to personalize their selection by choosing from different barrels which offer a variety of flavor profiles depending on how long the whiskey has been exposed to the secondary barrel. A third step enables guests to proof the whiskey to their desired taste (80, 90 or 100 proof), or they may opt to keep the original barrel strength. With the final step, KAD can print a short, personalized message on each label, and the bottles will be ready for customer pick-up at the Distillery the following day.

“The entire process has been designed to allow for ultimate customization at lower required bottle quantities, which is a huge step change for the industry,” added Emberson. “What better way to chronicle your visit to the Kentucky Derby or The Bourbon Trail™ than with a delicious souvenir and a custom taste of Kentucky.”

Consumer prices are dependent on the mashbill and are before taxes.

The 15-gallon barrels produce approximately 65 to 75 (750ml) bottles at barrel strength and are priced at $3,785 to $5,678 ($50-$75 per bottle).

The 25-gallon barrels produce approximately 115 to 125 (750ml) bottles at barrel strength and are priced at $5,299 to $7,949 ($42-$63 per bottle).

The 53-gallon barrels produce approximately 190 to 200 (750ml) bottles at barrel strength and are priced at $7,065 to $10,598 ($35-$52 per bottle).

Beginning April 8, two KAD Single Barrel Experiences are planned daily (one on Sundays), with reservations accepted Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets are $50 per person, which is applied to the purchase of a barrel. Reservations can be made on the KAD website.
