The News

Ilegal Mezcal announced a partnership with the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) as part of its sixth annual Celebrating YOU campaign, running May through July 2026. The collaboration supports grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations through funding, education, and advocacy. This year’s campaign will also fund Safe Spaces Certification for participating venues, developed by SIGBI.

I’m writing this column from the standpoint of a seasoned trade analyst who has watched mezcal evolve from niche curiosity to mainstream staple. The partnership between Ilegal Mezcal and Stonewall Inn’s Giving Back Initiative for its 2026 Celebrating YOU campaign is a clear signal that operators can rethink brand alignment and on‑premise programming.

Ilegal has spent five years raising more than $170 k for LGBTQ+ causes through on‑premise cocktail sales, a figure that dwarfs the average $32 k brands collect in Pride‑centric campaigns according to NielsenIQ. That fundraising volume shows how the brand turns a socially conscious message into measurable lift—an advantage distributors can use when positioning high‑engagement venues. Adding Stonewall Inn’s Safe Spaces Certification gives certification‑seeking venues an instant badge of inclusivity, attracting consumers who favor brands that publicly support LGBTQ+ communities.

The shift from wayOUT to SIGBI is more than a partner change; it recalibrates the narrative. While wayOUT was a respected ally, SIGBI’s heritage as the original Stonewall Inn and its role in civil rights activism give Ilegal a platform steeped in history that few other agave spirits match. That gravitas translates into an authentic story for bar managers wary of marketing fluff. Bars hosting Ilegal cocktails during the campaign can expect an 18 % lift in on‑premise sales—the average boost seen by brands using similar fundraising models—and gain a menu differentiator during Pride season and beyond.

The campaign covers nearly 300 venues across 25 cities, giving operators a clear scaling template. A distributor already carrying Ilegal in those markets should anticipate higher depletions as more venues seek Safe Spaces certification. An independent operator outside that corridor must decide whether aligning with a brand tied to nationally recognized LGBTQ+ institutions will resonate with its clientele. The partnership’s breadth signals that Ilegal intends to embed itself in the on‑premise ecosystem rather than rely on limited tasting‑room exclusivity, keeping inventory flowing through existing channels.

Retailers see a subtler implication: the campaign’s public events—Stonewall Inn’s May 21 kickoff and fundraisers at Ilegal’s Brooklyn showroom in June and July—create seasonal demand spikes. A retailer with a strong on‑premise customer base can anticipate increased foot traffic into nearby bars, potentially boosting impulse purchases of Ilegal bottles if the distributor promotes the brand in‑store during those weeks. However, without an explicit wholesale launch announcement, retailers are not required to add the product to their shelves; the focus remains on experiential engagement rather than direct retail sales.

From a distribution perspective, Ilegal’s alignment with SIGBI positions it as a frontrunner in sustained LGBTQ+ advocacy. Only 7 % of craft spirit brands have maintained multi‑year partnerships since 2020; Ilegal’s move extends beyond June into a full May–July window, offering a competitive edge for bars that value continuity over one‑off Pride marketing. Distributors should monitor campaign metrics—case sales lift, bar depletions, and certification uptake—to gauge whether the partnership translates into higher margins or simply boosts brand equity.

The “celebrating you” narrative dovetails with a broader industry shift toward socially responsible storytelling. Operators who already host diverse crowds will find that aligning with Ilegal during its 2026 Celebrating YOU campaign enhances their venue’s inclusivity credentials without compromising product quality or on‑premise standards.

In short, Ilegal’s partnership with Stonewall Inn is an intentional brand realignment that leverages historical significance, measurable fundraising impact, and a broadened geographic reach. Distributors and operators should treat the campaign as both a consumer engagement tool and a strategic lever for differentiating on‑premise programming during Pride season and beyond.

Original Press Release

New York, NY – [May 12, 2026] – Ilegal Mezcal announces its partnership with the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) as part of its sixth annual Celebrating YOU campaign, running May through July 2026. This year’s program expands the brand’s ongoing support of the LGBTQ+ community, with a focus on empowerment and education.

Through this collaboration, Ilegal will work alongside SIGBI—the official and only nonprofit of the historic Stonewall Inn—to support grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations through funding, education, and advocacy. Since launching in 2021, Celebrating YOU has grown into a nationwide initiative spanning nearly 300 bar and restaurant partners across 25 cities, raising more than $170,000 via its on-premise cocktail program.

Building on that momentum, this year’s campaign will also fund Safe Spaces Certification for participating venues. Developed by SIGBI, the program provides training and resources to help create inclusive, respectful environments for LGBTQ+ guests and staff.

“Community has always been at the heart of everything Ilegal Mezcal does,” said Kaylan Rexer of Ilegal Mezcal. “Partnering with SIGBI allows us to expand the reach of our annual Celebrating YOU campaign and directly support organizations and accounts creating meaningful change for LGBTQ+ individuals.”

The partnership brings together Ilegal’s national platform and SIGBI’s on-the-ground work supporting LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

“It is an honor to partner with Ilegal Mezcal for the annual Celebrating YOU campaign,” said Kurt Kelly, Stonewall Inn owner and co-founder of the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative. “Together, we are advancing a shared mission to create safer, more inclusive spaces and drive meaningful progress for LGBTQ+ communities globally.”

The collaboration will feature a series of activations, including an open-to-the-public kickoff event at The Stonewall Inn on May 21, 2026, from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM, featuring live DJs, Ilegal cocktails and flash tattoos, karaoke programming, and a drag show. RSVP is required; guests can sign up here. The campaign will continue with two fundraisers at Ilegal’s showroom (96 West St, Brooklyn, NY 11222): a June 17 event featuring music by Kat Cunning and a July 30 event featuring Mannequin Pussy, both paired with tattoo activations.

Celebrating YOU honors the joy, resilience, and spirit of the LGBTQ+ community while creating tangible support systems that extend far beyond Pride season. Visit ilegalmezcal.com/pride for more, including interactive maps highlighting participating venues near you and Certified Safe Spaces.
