The News

15 STARS announced the release of First West Explorer, its first bourbon in the First West collection that is 100% in-house distilled. The bourbon uses the brand's proprietary baby black corn mashbill, which is part of a five-grain profile including yellow corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. The product was aged and refined using the brand's Flavor Proofed™ process. The announcement was made on May 27, 2026, in Bardstown, Ky.

15 STARS has unveiled its first in‑house distilled bourbon, First West Explorer. The launch is more than a new SKU—it hints at higher pricing and a tighter distribution model that may affect how retailers stock the product.

Priced at $49.99, First West Explorer sits in the premium tier that saw an 8.5 % lift in average bottle price for premium bourbon in 2024 per NielsenIQ. The brand’s baby‑black corn blend is meant to justify this premium positioning.

The release will be available only at a handful of retailers, bypassing wholesale channels. With off‑premise sales accounting for 65 % of U.S. whiskey volume (Beverage Dynamics), the limited retail rollout could constrain overall reach despite the high margin.

Kentucky remains the leading bourbon‑producing state, accounting for 75 % of global production per the Kentucky Distillers' Association. By distilling on‑site in Bardstown, 15 STARS taps a statewide network of expertise that rivals larger conglomerates while keeping logistics lean.

The launch comes amid a global bourbon market projected to grow at a 6.9 % CAGR through 2030 (Grand View Research), reinforcing industry momentum toward premium products.

Distributors should view First West Explorer as a high‑margin, prestige product rather than a volume driver. The limited distribution model invites boutique retailers to position it as an exclusive offering that can command higher case turnover. Mainstream chains may need to justify carrying the bourbon against broader‑portfolio competitors.

Retailers and wholesalers must keep inventory levels in check. Because the launch is limited to select retailers, any supply hiccups will be magnified in off‑premise channels that dominate U.S. whiskey sales. Operators seeking a new cocktail base can use First West Explorer’s five‑grain profile as a menu differentiator, but they should not expect it to replace existing staples until distribution expands.

First West Explorer Marks a Major Milestone for 15 STARS, Crafted with the Brand’s Proprietary Baby Black Corn Mashbill

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (May 27, 2026) – Today, 15 STARS proudly announces the fourth release in its acclaimed First West collection: First West Explorer. Joining First West Small Batch, First West Toasted Oak and First West Extra Aged, this new expression represents a defining milestone for the brand as its first with 100% in-house distilled bourbon.

Crafted entirely from 15 STARS distilled whiskey, First West Explorer also debuts the brand’s proprietary baby black corn mashbill, unlocking a richer, more distinctive flavor profile unique to First West Bourbon. This unique blend is classified as a four-grain bourbon, featuring rye, wheat, and malted barley flavoring grains, but with the addition of both baby black and yellow corn, it more accurately delivers a distinctive five-grain bourbon profile. Aged with intention and refined through the brand’s signature Flavor Proofed™ process, the result is a bourbon layered with depth, balance, and complexity.

“We’re incredibly excited to introduce our first fully distilled 15 STARS expression, especially as it showcases the very first mashbill we ever produced using our proprietary baby black corn,” said Ricky Johnson, co-founder of 15 STARS. “That black corn, paired with wheat as the flavoring grain, creates a bourbon that’s naturally sweet and exceptionally smooth. Blending it with our yellow corn rye bourbon adds another layer of complexity, resulting in a truly distinctive pour.”

Continuing the brand’s tribute to Kentucky and the American frontier as the birthplace of bourbon, First West Explorer is housed in the historic-inspired blue bottle, paying homage to the first glass bottles ever made in Kentucky and used for bourbon. The expression features a blend of Kentucky Straight Bourbons aged five and six years, delivering a richly nuanced pour.
