The News

St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery has purchased the Rudd Estate in Oakville, Napa Valley, effective April 13, 2026. The purchase was announced by Emma Swain, CEO of St. Supéry, and Darrell Swank, Trustee of the Leslie G. Rudd Estate. The Rudd Estate, founded in 1996, is known for its eastern Oakville terroir and commitment to preserving the land. The estate will be managed under St. Supéry's stewardship, which is owned by Chanel.

When a major estate‑wine player announces an acquisition, I look first at how it shifts the channel’s inventory mix and margin profile—especially when the new property lies in a high‑value AVA such as Oakville.

St. Supéry’s purchase of Rudd Estate on April 13, 2026 signals a targeted move into the premium Oakville segment while doubling down on sustainability credentials that are increasingly hard to ignore.

St. Supéry already controls more than 600 acres planted across its 1,650‑acre holdings and produces roughly 10 % of all Sauvignon Blanc grown in Napa Valley. The acquisition brings under St. Supéry’s umbrella fewer than 650 cases of Oakville Estate Red each vintage—a modest, predictable increase that can feed into shelf‑planning decisions. Operators will see a small rise in high‑margin, low‑volume offerings priced over $200 per bottle—above the $120 Napa‑wide benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon in 2025.

Environmental insight follows the certification data: only roughly 18 % of Napa Valley vineyards hold the Napa Green label, yet both St. Supéry and Rudd Estate have earned it. That makes the combined estate a rare example of comprehensive sustainability practices in an industry still dominated by conventional agriculture. Distributors gain a distinct product line capable of supporting premium pricing and attracting customers ready to pay more for green credentials.

Because St. Supéry is 100 % estate‑grown, the supply chain remains tightly controlled from vine to bottle. St. Supéry’s existing wholesale distribution model stays unchanged; the release makes no mention of an exclusive partnership with a particular wholesaler. Distributors can add Rudd Estate’s offerings as part of their regular lineup—placing them in Oakville‑focused shelves, adjusting pricing tiers, and monitoring depletion rates as the first vintages arrive.

On‑premise operators face two clear implications. First, the new Oakville Red is expected to appear alongside bars that already stock St. Supéry’s premium wines, offering a coherent terroir story that supports higher pour prices. Second, with under 650 cases produced each vintage, the bottling volume is small enough to generate scarcity yet sufficient to maintain a steady supply cycle—critical for venues dependent on reliable inventory.

Distributors should monitor how St. Supéry markets the Oakville narrative in contrast to competitors that continue to source bulk fruit. Rudd Estate’s focus on sustainability and full estate ownership creates a distinct selling point that can be highlighted within the green market segment, allowing higher pricing while keeping volumes modest. Practically, this translates into raising margin expectations for Oakville releases and potentially negotiating more favorable pricing terms with St. Supéry’s sales team.

The acquisition aligns terroir, sustainability, and controlled supply, providing distributors with a niche, high‑margin product line and giving on‑premise operators a clear story that supports premium pours. Trade readers should note that the new Oakville Red adds fewer than 650 cases each year—a measurable increase that can inform shelf allocation and price setting.

Original Press Release

Emma Swain, CEO of St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery, and Darrell Swank, Trustee of the Leslie G. Rudd Estate, are pleased to announce the exciting next chapter of the renowned Rudd Estate in Oakville, Napa Valley under St. Supéry ownership, effective April 13, 2026. Under the stewardship of St. Supéry, which is owned by Chanel, this remarkable estate will be preserved and cultivated with the same dedication to craft and generational thinking that has defined both organizations.

Founded by Leslie and Susan Rudd in 1996, the Rudd family has spent three decades pursuing a singular focus: to realize the full potential of its land while honoring a commitment to leave it better than they found it. The result is one of Napa Valley's most distinctive estates — a property defined by its eastern Oakville terroir and an unwavering standard of excellence.

“Our philosophy has always been one of stewardship – preserving the land and its potential for generations to come. Rudd Estate’s eastern Oakville region, an area of Napa Valley I have long admired, represents exactly the kind of place we feel called to nurture,” said Emma Swain. “We look forward to working hand in hand with the Rudd Estate team to honor the distinctive sense of place this property has spent decades earning."

“Rudd and St. Supéry share a deep commitment to estate wines, craftsmanship, sustainability, and excellence. This commitment extends beyond Napa Valley to the wineries owned by Chanel in Margaux, Saint-Émilion, and Porquerolles. It’s exciting to see the Rudd family’s legacy continue with a partner who values those things so deeply,” said Swank.

St. Supéry is one of the rare 100% estate-grown Napa Valley wineries with over 1,650 acres of land and 600+ acres planted to vines, on four distinct parcels: the Dollarhide Estate Vineyard in northeastern Napa Valley, the two Rutherford Estate Vineyards, and now the exemplary Rudd Estate in Oakville.

Founded in 1982, St. Supéry is known for sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon, growing close to 10% of all sauvignon blanc in Napa Valley, with Napa Green Vineyard and Winery certifications. In 2015, Chanel purchased St. Supéry, marking its first foray into winery ownership in the United States. Chanel also owns Château Canon, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Berliquet in Bordeaux, along with Domaine de l’Ile at Porquerolles, Côtes de Provence.

St. Supéry intends to continue producing wines from the Rudd Estate and will be offering currently bottled wines for sale through its wholesale and direct to consumer channel.Mitzi Inglis
